UFC 118: Edgar over Penn, Toney under Couture
UFC 118 provided few surprises. Nate Diaz blew threw Marcus Davis, Gray Maynard out-wrestled Kenny Florian, Demian Mia beats Miranda, Couture subs Toney, and Edgar gets another decision over BJ Penn. My thoughts:
BJ Penn has exposed his one weakness, an inability to deal with someone who won't stand in front of him. Gray Maynard gets the next title shot apparently, and I suspect the Edgar v. Maynard II will be a five round wrestling match that will provide little excitement, if any.
Nate Diaz is an animal, Demian Mia is submission machine with a glass chin, and Randy Couture...well, he's Randy Couture, of course he's going to submit James Toney. I'm betting Randy could also pull off victories over Michael Jordon, Hulk Hogan, and Lawerence Taylor. Just saying. I love Randy, but come on.
I'm also a huge James Toney fan. Toney's abilities and craftiness inside a boxing ring is truly amazing, even at this age...and shape. Although post-fight he said "I'll be back", I don't think he will...nor do I want to see him in the cage again.
Super Six: Taylor KTFO…Again, Dirrell Robbed
Jermaine Taylor is still in the tournament, of course, but he'll be moving forward with far less confidence after yet another devastating knock out. Unfortunately, this is the third time in his last four fights he's been on the wrong end of the KO. I thought he looked good stamina wise, but he just wasn't throwing the right hand. I had him down by two going into the 12th round, and with only seconds left in the fight Abraham landed a straight right that probably would've dropped a horse. Three points for Abraham.

The second fight of the night wasn't a disappointment either, as there was plenty of foul play and drama throughout. Andre Dirrell clearly won the fight, landing literally dozens more hard, accurate shots, but he didn't get the decision. By round four Froch realized he couldn't compete with Dirrell's speed and his frustration led to some dirty boxing, although it was Dirrell who lost a point later in the fight for holding.
Froch later said Andre was running and he was trying to get him to fight, but it certainly seemed to me that Andre was fighting as he landed combination after combination on Froch's face. I will agree that Dirrell desperately needs to develop his in-fighting skills so that he doesn't have to rely on holding so much, but that shouldn't take away from the fact that he landed far more clean, effective blows.
Dirrell is a real threat to win this entire tournament, and I for one am looking forward to the remaining fights.
Dana White (@danawhiteufc) Calls Out PBF, but Not HBO
If you know anything about Dana White you know he has no problem speaking his mind. Agree or disagree with him, I appreciate that. Earlier today the UFC posted the video below:
Dana, while I agree with much of what you're saying about Floyd, your jabs at the sport of boxing are misdirected; you should be punching HBO Sports and a few of its more notable promoters dead in the throat. It's not the sport of boxing, it's the ignorance (and fear) of a select few who control the sport.
Head Says Mayweather, Heart Says Marquez
Floyd is bigger, younger, and faster. If he doesn't win, it'll shock the boxing world...maybe even the Marquez camp?

Juan Manuel Marquez following his fight with Marco Antonio Barrera
While there was no sign of it in HBO's first episode of the Mayweather v. Marquez 24/7 series, Michael Marley of Boxingconfidential.com is reporting that Nacho Beristain's mood is less than stellar.
Michael writes in his article "Gloom, doom pervades Juan Ma camp in Mexico City!" that “He’s told Mexican journalists that people are surrounding Juan Ma and his boxing brother, Rafael, and blowing up their heads,” one LA-based fight guy said. “Nacho has complained about not having any Mayweather style sparring also. Nacho is thrifty himself but he views promoter Golden Boy as thriftier.”
Alright, where does one find Mayweather style sparring these days? Lets face it, the options are limited at best, and at least one of those options is a stakeholder in Golden Boy.
The tale of this fight may very well be told in how much Marquez can take before the fight is stopped due to cuts. He won't quit, and he'll be game the entire fight, but he will take his lumps and chances are he'll take them early.
If he can persevere, as he's done several times in the past at lighter weights, the odds of him pulling off the upset improve. He'll need a knockout though, because he's not going to get a decision over Golden Boy's golden boy in Vegas...no matter how many rounds he wins.
The Bigger Question?
Maybe the question isn't who will win the fight, but who will win the night...UFC or HBO PPV? This is boxing's biggest star coming back to rake in the cash, but UFC 103 will likely put a substantial dent in to the PPV numbers. I'm not knocking the UFC 103 card, but if it were up to me I would've stacked the deck a little higher for this one...you know, for sentimental reasons.
Floyd Mayweather to “host” WWE “Raw” – ESPN
This is priceless. Why wouldn't the UFC want to be associated with a fictitious sport that is proud to feature bad theatrics and pre-determined outcomes? It just doesn't make sense...if you're a complete idiot.
PBF & HBO proving once again that they're not about the sport, they're about making money at any cost. Go figure.
