UFC 118: Edgar over Penn, Toney under Couture

UFC 118 provided few surprises. Nate Diaz blew threw Marcus Davis, Gray Maynard out-wrestled Kenny Florian, Demian Mia beats Miranda, Couture subs Toney, and Edgar gets another decision over BJ Penn. My thoughts:

BJ Penn has exposed his one weakness, an inability to deal with someone who won't stand in front of him. Gray Maynard gets the next title shot apparently, and I suspect the Edgar v. Maynard II will be a five round wrestling match that will provide little excitement, if any.

Nate Diaz is an animal, Demian Mia is submission machine with a glass chin, and Randy Couture...well, he's Randy Couture, of course he's going to submit James Toney. I'm betting Randy could also pull off victories over Michael Jordon, Hulk Hogan, and Lawerence Taylor. Just saying. I love Randy, but come on.

I'm also a huge James Toney fan. Toney's abilities and craftiness inside a boxing ring is truly amazing, even at this age...and shape. Although post-fight he said "I'll be back", I don't think he will...nor do I want to see him in the cage again.

Sonnen puts it on Silva and walks away empty handed…

Man, I can't believe its been like 9 months since I posted to this blog. To say I've been busy is an understatement, but still...9 months???

UFC 117 turned out to be a great night of fights, even if there were only a few surprises. I'll be completely honest and tell you that I totally did not expect Chael to be able to do what he did. Simply amazing the way he put it on Silva for four rounds and three minutes. Silva pulled it out though, and Chael didn't have jack to say about the tap. Kudos to him.

Something else I don't mind calling myself out on - I was a bit critical of Chael's trash talking before the fight. I enjoyed it, but just thought it was a bit too much. Look, I understand selling a fight, but come on. After watching the fight and listening to him post fight though, I stand corrected. He sold the fight AND made the fight. What more can you ask for?
